The Onkyo TX-RZ-830 is one of Onkyo’s latest mid-range AV receiver offerings. The 9.2 channel, 120 watt per channel amp comes loaded with snazzy video and audio features that would rival some flagship receivers.
If you’ve walked down the aisles of your nearest big box store recently, you’re sure to have noticed that 1080p resolution as a selling point for TVs is a thing of the past. The latest “it” feature is 4K-Ultra HD and nearly every TV set on store shelves touts its 4K superiority. Of course, if you’re in the market for a new AV receiver you’ll want to make sure that its capable of handling the latest TV video standard. Luckily if you pick-up the Onkyo TX-RZ830 this is something you don’t have to worry about. The 830 ticks off pretty much all of the 4K boxes – HDCP 2.2, HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision and BT.2020 are all present and accounted for.
On the audio side of things, the list is long. First-of-all, the Onkyo TX-RZ830 is THX Certified Select. In order to receive this designation, the 830 had to pass 2,000 bench-tests in 75 categories covering 14,000 data points. In addition to this certification, the Onkyo 830 is able to process most of today’s top audio formats including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Both of these formats allow sound engineers to map sounds in 3D space. If you have the proper speaker arrangement, the results are a listening experience that’s more realistic. The 830 also has both Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X which up-mixes old soundtracks to near Dolby Atmos or DTS:X levels. The 9 channel Onkyo 830 supports a speaker arrangement of 5.2.4 or 7.2.2. Hook-up a stereo amplifier to the 830’s pre-outs and you can run a 7.2.4 setup. Also, before I move on, I want to mention that this receiver also features a phono connection to facilitate the connection of a turntable.
The Onkyo TX-RZ830 is also pretty well equipped to tackle multi-room audio. The amp plays nice with Sonos, which means you can bring the 830 into your existing Sonos ecosystem and control many of the receiver’s functions with the Sonos Connect app. Alternatively, multiroom audio can also be achieved via DTS:Play-Fi which also comes part and parcel with the amp.
Since we’re on the subjecting of streaming audio, the Onkyo 830 includes Chromecast built-in on its list of features. If you have a nearby speaker with Google Assistant, you can control some of the features of the 830 simply by barking commands. Apple’s AirPlay also makes the grade as do TIDAL, Deezer, Pandora, Spotify, and TuneIn. If you prefer to stream music from your device, the Onkyo TX-RZ830 also features built-in Bluetooth.
All-in-all, the Onkyo TX-RZ830 looks to be total home theater package. If the Onkyo TX-RZ830 sounds like the receiver for you, then you shouldn’t have any problems finding it. It’s on the store shelves of most major retailers as we speak.
